Emma finds resilience through Trauma-Informed care

Emma* engaged with Ruah’s services for approximately 14 months. When she first reached out, she felt overwhelmed. Returning to Australia after separating from her husband brought enormous challenges, including moving into accommodation that had historically been abusive during her childhood. Initial sessions were difficult, and Emma struggled to move forward in her recovery, making it hard for her to commit fully amidst these circumstances.

Initially, housing was secured for Emma, but she continued to experience feelings of low self-esteem that impacted her personal independence. Through her journey with Ruah and our Stronger Ground Outreach team , she worked hard on improving her mental health, attending clinical appointments at Alma Street Mental Health Service (ASMHS), including trauma therapy.

Alongside clinical support, the Stronger Ground team helped Emma engage in a wide range of programs and services: she participated in Good Days recreation groups, received guidance with Centrelink, applied for housing, accessed GP and ASMHS support, and engaged in many discussions to maintain stable mental health and unpack historical trauma.

Over time, the support Emma received helped her build her self-esteem, transforming her sense of personal autonomy. She began to talk openly about her trauma, advocate for herself, and make future-focused decisions to positively shape her life.

Emma has now moved out of her previous property into a safer environment and has progressed beyond the “Stuck Stage” of change. Along the way, she has found her voice, embraced her story, and gained the confidence to advocate for herself.

Emma’s journey is a testament to resilience, courage, and the power of holistic, person-centred support in helping someone reclaim their life.
