Ruah’s Wongee Mia team has been named as a finalist in the Team Excellence category of the 2020 Hesta Excellence Awards.
This innovative pilot housing project is designed to end the cycle of evictions and long-term homelessness disproportionately experienced by Aboriginal people.
Meaning ‘Strong Home’, Wongee Mia is based on the understanding that services need to think differently about how they provide appropriate support for Aboriginal people. The project recognises that Aboriginal families need tailored and culturally appropriate support to help them deal with the kinship obligations that often lead to overcrowding and breaches when they are housed through mainstream programs.
Wongee Mia is generously funded by the Sisters of St John of God and received seed funding from PwC and the Mercy Foundation. We thank our funders for their ongoing support which enables the team to achieve such positive outcomes for vulnerable people in our community.
The winner of the awards will be announced over live broadcast on Thursday 26 November.
